Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
