Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
