The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
